Fed Funding for Documentary Editing Projects about to be Cut by Nearly an Order of Magnitude.

This will have massive effects on ongoing projects.
NHPRC grants impact sheets are now available on the SAA’s website at: http://www2.archivists.org/news/2011/action-alert-stop-the-house-from-cutting-nhprc-funding-to-just-1-million
If you have a stake in the use of historical records please take a moment to phone or fax a congress person on the House Appropriations Committee (see the above link).

I totally appreciate the importance of historical records. And it is sad that federal funding is going to be cut.
However —– as I’m sure you’re aware……….We are absolutely, totally, completely broke as a nation. Not only are we broke, but we are way way down in a black hole of red ink. And the politicians on that House Appropriations Committee are themselves to blame for it.
I’m not going to point fingers at less worthy programs (there are a lot of them). But saving 6 million dollars at the sacrifice of many state history and education programs seems like a poor place to start budget cutting. But then again, perhaps it is politically safe.
The entire situation is quite sad. And you’re right, six million, out of 14 trillion, is quite small.
