Relief Society Organization Minutes

We got around to putting up the Nauvoo Relief Society organization minutes in the Parallel Joseph. It had an abbreviated version previously. The one up now has the text from Eliza R. Snow’s minute book. It’s missing some of the text, but has all the Joseph Smith material I think [Edit: the online text is now the complete Snow minutes for that meeting]. Go to the March 17, 1842 entry if you want to read. The naming debate is interesting. The Relief Society was parallel to a movement in Protestantism to expand the role of women in religion.

Great work. Do you not include Jessee’s typescript of the Book of the Law of the Lord, for copyright reasons?

  2. W. V. Smith says:

We had Jessee’s version up before, but this one seemed more appropriate. The old historical dept. was ok with the BLL version, but I like this one more. I think we’ll expand it to the complete entry. It’s just rather neat. We might put the BLL one back in parallel form. After all, it’s what we do……

Thank you. The Parallel Joseph is a great resource.

  4. Bradley Barnhart says:

If possible, I’d like to see the rest of Eliza R. Snow’s minute book dealing with the ‘Female Relief Society of Nauvoo’ especially in relation to the women laying on hands on other women & Joseph’s response to that once he learned of it happening at a later meeting.

  5. W. V. Smith says:

That’s probably on the list of things to do, Bradley. If not, I’ll see that it gets on that list.
